Halki Suit Balat | Historic Building Restoration, Istanbul

THE BRIEF
Restore a historic building in Balat for contemporary accommodation while respecting its architectural character. Balat and neighbouring Fener carry the layered heritage of the Golden Horn, with nineteenth-century homes, workshops and waterfront trade forming part of their urban identity.

THE PROCESS
Led by Zafer Kaymaz, the project ran from December 2025 to September 2026. Existing-condition records and architectural drawings guided the work, followed by the exposure of masonry and timber elements, floor and partition works, window joinery, decorative ceilings and interior finishes. An exceptional specialist restoration team brought skill and care to each stage.

THE DESIGN
Façade proportions, timber craftsmanship and the character of the rooms informed a warm, restrained interior language. The gallery follows the transformation through site photographs, drawings and clearly identified design visualizations.
